  1. I miss my Drake B Line. I have Kenwood 599 twins waiting to be restored. Yesterday I had my Flex SDR-1000 QRP radio on the air! I love old radios but no longer have any of my really old (all) tube radios. The real "operating" difference between old and new radios is seemingly very small - maybe with the exception of CW selectivity. Did I mention I miss my B Line...

    1. Dave, it sounds like you may need to make a trip to Dayton in a few months & shop for your old Drakes! I think I'm going to open up a business that rents big 12V batteries with 120VAC inverters on a dolly so people can push them around at hamfests to power-up the gear they're considering buying.

And if I see Drake gear being hauled to a vehicle with Colorado plates, I'll know it's you!

  2. I spied the Hallicrafters SX-99 receiver - that was my Novice receiver in 1970, along with a borrowed Knight Kit T-60, and a Dow-Key relay. Had a crystal for 40m, and one that multiplied into the 15m Novice segment. Horizontal 'vee' antenna in my folks' L-shaped one-story attic. Worked the world.

Two of my high school friends at the time had access to Drake B-lines (T4XB, R4B, MS4/AC4) with the ever-present Shure 444 mic, courtesy of their dads who had a license (rarely used, which meant us kids got a lot of time on those radios). Spent many a night at one friend's place in the ham shack in the back of their garage, using the Drake line and a TA-33 beam on a fifty-foot tower. Worked the world.

Those two Drake B-lines formed our high school radio clubs Field Day, with two Hygain 14AVQ verticals stuck in the elementary school playground, across from our club president's house (access to restroom). Worked the world.

    Sigh.

    1. You two Daves are making me regret not buying the Ten-Tec Century - that was my Novice station, along with a Cushcraft ATB-35. Worked the world.

To prevent spending too much, I silently asked myself "How many hamfests has that radio seen?". That made it easier to keep on walking.
