Time for North American DXers to consider antennas for Bouvet via long-path?

Ken LA7GIA recently announced plans for a team to activate 3Y0J Bouvet Island in November 2022.

His team will be making a beach landing on Cape Fie, located on the southeastern part of the island. The plan is to set up their stations near the beach and not go up onto the glacier.

This places much of the 10km-diameter island in the short-haul path of NA, including the highest part of the island which is 780 meters in elevation. Here are short-path bearings to several areas of NA:

  1. Signals to part of USA will be not that strong this way I guess. But you're in TX and a bit lucky the signal doesn't have to travel over the highest mountain. Would it be possible to work them longpath next year?? 73, Bas

    1. Hi Bas,

I'm not sure - I have so few LP contacts that I'm not too familiar with bands/times/locations. 15 months to figure it out though!

  2. I dont think they would be camping at the beach, they will climb the rock and set up camp as mentioned on their website. So SP remains a fair shot for NA.

    1. That's great but there will still be significant mountains via SP to NA.

  3. Your map (and prediction using the Long Path) showing the mountains in the Short Path to North America was right on the money!
