FT-891 Powerpole conversion

A few days ago YouTube featured a video showing a method of converting the Molex power plug on a Yaesu FT-891 to an Anderson Power Pole.

Since most of my gear uses this type of DC connector it made sense to add the FT-891 to the list.

It also greatly reduces the mass of wire that I didn't need but was hesitant to cut in case I ever decide to sell the rig.

I use the FT-891 both stationary mobile and portable and need different wire lengths for each.

Having Power Poles simplifies the the usability of the rig in terms of powering it from one application (mobile, portable) to the next.

Jason (N0BOY) makes a Power Pole Conversion kit for the FT-891 available in three stages of completion. I ordered the 'Basic + Wiring' version ($16) and did the conversion today.

The kits ship from Oregon.

Removing the bottom cover of the FT-891 (8 small screws) reveals the internal connections of the existing DC plug

.

The shape and size of an APP are ideally suited to the opening in the FT-891. The APP is held securely by the lip of the 891's opening fitting into the curved portion of the power pole.

An internal and external piece secures the APP into place with an Allen screw

The finished project is a perfect fit and looks good

The fuse holders from the original DC cable were "Power Pole'd" for insertion in series with the new DC cable
