Packed up and ready to roll |
I am now engaged in a great reminiscence to determine whether that freedom, or any freedom so conceived, can long endure. It is altogether fitting and proper that I should do this.
And so agrees the Little Lady, even if I don't paraphrase old Abe.
The motorcycles in the garage have changed much over the years, from my old Honda CB100. The current one sports a full tank of gas and a complete POTA station.
In 1973, that would've meant lashing an FT-101 onto the tiny Honda. But today it's a KX2 and a ground-mounted vertical in the rear trunk of my R1150RT. Weighs next to nothing.
I'll be leaving from central Florida on the morning of 12 March and going in a Texas-ish direction. I don't know if I'll be out for three days or 10. I'll make it to Alabama for sure...maybe Texas, if the weather's good and the mood stays with me.
POTA'ing along the way, of course, to get my Morse fix, rest my weary ass, re-hydrate and reflect on the beauty of whatever park surrounds me at the time. Two lane roads will be the order of the day(s) - no interstates.
A side interest on this trip will be to ride through small towns in the Deep South, camera rolling. For some reason, they appeal and I want to see them. Nostalgia rendered in brick and stone, redneck style
Park activity (probably on very short notice) will be posted here.
Activity will be CW only, 10-20 meters, 10 watts.

Hello John, I wish you good luck on your travel at this small adventure. Enjoy your freedom... 73, Bas
ReplyDeleteThanks Bas. I'm out the door in 30 minutes...

Looks like I'll only make it as far as Mississippi. "Slight rain" that was previously forecast for Texas and Louisiana has no become "Heavy rain with hail and possible tornados". So a couple of Mississippi activations this morning, then back into Alabama, Florida and home. There's no way around this storm.
ReplyDeleteHi John, sorry to hear that the weather has scuppered your plans for a longer break. To be honest, here in the UK that sort of thing happens all the time. I plan going somewhere in my head and then nearer the time I'm often forced to head in a completely dryer direction (if such a direction exists in the UK).
ReplyDeleteAs for me, I got into biking back in the early 70's and I even invented the concept of "BUY NOW - PAY LATER" by taking a Honda 250 G5 off my cousin and promising to pay him in a few weeks time.
Take care - stay safe.

Rain I can handle - it's the hail and tornados that interfere with my ability to handle a motorcycle! Already working on a second attempt at this soiree.

Your icon picture looks like a DR650, but on opening it up, this thread shows a BMW.
ReplyDeleteWhat a let down!
I was looking forward to stories of radio on a bush pig.
I was out on mine yesterday, albeit not with radio. Haven't got there yet, but your efforts may inspire me to pack the FT817 and a squid pole on the bike

Hello Bill - yes, that is a DR650...a bike I no longer have but enjoyed immensely. This may be more to your liking - there are a couple of videos after the photos:

I do still ponder the idea of getting another dual-sport bike. The Honda Trans-Alp has caught my eye...
