Video: Destruction, dolphins, KX2 and POTA

Cedar Key, Florida has been a favorite motorcycle-ride destination of mine for a couple of years now. It's

a laid-back "Old Florida" town, off the beaten track. A couple restaurants, three bars and a few shops - not too much else.

The real Margaritaville.

Hurricane Milton passed this way a few weeks ago and I was expecting to see large-scale devastation.

While the waterfront shops did suffer significant damage, the overall damage from the storm were less than I'd expected.

Coulda been much worse - I'm glad it wasn't.

The harbor separating Cedar Key from Atsena Otie Key is a playground for dolphins and makes for a fun kayaking trip to Atsena Otie, a POTA site accessible only by boat.

No kayaking for me today but the splashes I saw from the shore quickly distracted me from the hurricane damaged town and I sent my drone over for a look.

The KX2 performed well, as always, and the vertical made DX possible: France, Poland and Sweden in the log.

  1. Nice video. I was fascinated by the dolphins.

When I activate, it is the occasional comment that someone I know drops that makes me smile. I figured you were fair game for one.

  2. Hello John, I enjoyed the video. So quiet after the big storm. I wouldn't feel save in such wooden sheds just on a few poles in the water. Looks like a relaxing place to be. I start to recognise the callsigns from your activation in CW. Hopefully I will be able to operate CW like that in the near future. 73, Bas

    1. Hi Bas, yes, given the construction and the winds they endured, I was very surprised that anything there was left standing. We had 135 km/h wind at my QTH and I am 100km away from the coast. Cedar Key was closed to outside visitors for 8 days after the storm so they could clean up. I believe the construction is like this so that it will be easy, fast and inexpensive to rebuild. I'll return in a month or so and see how it's going.

      John
