Fantastic news from the ARRL

If you're an ARRL member, you now have access to the digital versions of all four of their periodic publications: QST, QEX, NCJ and On The Air.

This represents an excellent value since the previous cost of both NCJ and QEX were about the same price as membership (QST) and a subscriber to either of those two pubs had to already be a paying member.

I've been a subscriber to both NCJ and QEX at times but couldn't justify the additional price over that of membership - now they're both included, as is On The Air.

Current issues of all four magazines can be accessed here by members. And QEX has an informative article about the nanoVNA, one of the other best deals in the hobby in recent times.

  1. That is great news, and I was like you John I did have NCJ and QEX but dropped them due to price. This will give me but more reading time!

  2. Their website page is out of date. It has direct links for QST and On The Air, but none for QEX and NCJ. Once in the QST or On The Air web app, there seems no way to navigate to the other magazine(s).

On the other hand, my Android ARRL Magazines app, once launched, has a banner across the top with selections for QST, QEX, NCJ, and On the Air. Each of those lead to the latest issue of those respective journals, as well as archives of back issues. For QEX, NCJ, and On the Air, the archives only go back to January of this year. That makes sense for On the Air, which has only been published since January, but I wonder if we will ever get access to earlier back issues of QEX and NCJ? For QST, back issues before it 'went digital' are on the ARRL web site as PDFs (well, the individual articles are, not entire back issues, which is a bit annoying).

I've had a print subscription to QEX for quite a while, and I've been retaining them for reference, but ever since all of QST in one form or another has been available to members (and I now have a life membership), I see no reason to hold on to print QSTs for longer than a year or so. So, they go in the recycle bin. I find that I can no longer even give them away at swaps or at the local club meeting, because everyone else that would be getting them as ARRL members also have the same online access as I do.
The local library doesn't want them either. I used to be able to give them away to the library, if I went to the trouble and expense to have them bound in 1-yr. volumes, but that doesn't seem to work any more, either.

    1. I'm sure the website will be update in time - it does say Coming Soon. But the sample issues available for each of those magazines is the current issue. I'm assuming back issues will be available eventually, but if not, at least all issues going forward will be. That's good enough for me, especially given the additional price of 0$.

The only ham mag I receive in the mail is QST and I try to resist reading the online version which is usually made available a week prior to the paper version being delivered. I'll probably forgo the mailed version once I'm due to renew.
