KX2 on AM

I just loaded Elecraft's latest beta firmware to my KX2 and am now enjoying good quality AM reception on the commercial shortwave bands. Athough AM transmit is also enabled, my interest in this firmware release is in shortwave listening.

In the half hour since downloading the firmware I've heard WWV on both 10 and 15 MHz, Radio Cuba, Radio China International and a host of other stations with good quality on the 31, 25 and 19-meter bands. I'll upload a YouTube video sometime tomorrow - suffice it to say for now that I am quite impressed!

  1. NICE! ...I'm about to upload mine. Wow ...this gives OMs another justifying reason to pitch their spouses for the purchase this radio ...SWLing! "Honey we really need this all multi-mode radio for when we go camping and when the SHTF ...because we can listen to world news etc"

    1. Yep, it's pretty amazing. In one simple software download, the performance to size ratio of this already amazing rig just took a big leap upward.

  2. I've always liked to have a general coverage receiver available with my rig. Sounds like you've got a winner with this new radio.

    1. It is nice to have as long as ham band performance isn't compromised in the design - many of us got our start in radio be being SWLers. Being added via firmware maintains the KX2's original intent on being primarily a ham rig.

  3. Can I ask what antenna you're using?

    1. My only antenna up at the moment is a Force 12 C3e, at 16m. I take my 30-80m dipole down every summer (thunderstorm season) and put it back up again (at 25m) in early October.

  4. John, (OT) I was listening back to some audio I recorded on a summit awhile ago and I was amazed how good the QSK is in the KX2 ...it sounded like my signal was just another signal on the band answering a chaser (had my sidetone set to match the average signal on the band.) You're not so much aware of this when you're actually sending/transmitting cause you're more focus on your sending of course but hearing it in the blind (playback) it's hard to tell where it was recorded ...maybe by some 3rd party listening station perhaps. Kudos to Elecraft!

  5. Just uploaded the BETA firmware for my KX2. Great to have good AM reception, I 'cut my radio teeth' as a kid with SWLing. Now, since BBC World Service no longer exists on SW, can someone recommend a good station for International News ? Gordon Murray VE3JSJ (My email is G@GEM.CA)

    1. The irony - a small, very capable ham/SWL rig and very little worth listening to. I miss the days of Radio Moscow and all the others. I'll be paying more attention to SW articles in The Spectrum Monitor and will pass along any info on international news I find.
